Oh where, oh where did my little Simon come from?

Simon the dashing and handsome looking logo of the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society has been around awhile. It was back in 1984 when Detective’s Bob O’Reilly, then vice president of the society and Detective Billy Dwyer of the vice control unit, then secretary of the society, were in the old Boston Police headquarters at 150 Berkley Street. That building has since been converted to a hotel. At a monthly meeting the late Detective Joe Lundbohm, a member of the board of directors and one of the original founding fathers of the society had broached the idea of a detective’s logo to distinguish the society as an entity in itself.

Remember your first tour of duty

Remember your first tour of duty on the job? I remember it like was only yesterday. I graduated from the BPD Academy, class of 2/14/1968.

After the 14 weeks of mandatory training, I was assigned to station Ten at Roxbury Crossing.

This was 4 years prior to the merger of Stations Ten and Nine to form Area B-2 at the brand new facility at 135 Dudley St. I reported for duty for my first roll call for a last half tour from 11:45 P.M. to 7:30 A.M. Of course I was there at 11 P.M. I met a few of my fellow classmates, George “Buddy” McGrath, later chief clerk at C-11,

Some history of the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society

Part 1..  It was March 23, l979 and the first meeting of all the detectives in the Boston police department was held at Florian Hall, Hallet st, Dorchester., only 3 detectives were missing.  

After some discussion it was a motion from the floor that we form our own social organization. we put a set of officers in place pending a formal election in May of l979. And we were still members of the B.P.P.A. We appointed Detective Robert Chenette of the Organized Crime Unit as our first president. Detective Donald Varnerin of the Intelligence Unit as our first vice president, both now deceased  Detective Jack Mc Cormack of the Vice Control Unit as our Treasurer  and Detective Eddie  Miller of the Suffolk County District Attorneys office to be our secretary.
