Welcome

Welcome to The Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society Website

The Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society is the union representing all Boston Police Detectives. Personally I like to think of it more as “our team”. I am a football fan and I find myself relating the things we do here to a football team in a lot of ways.

Like a football player I did not get the starting job right out of the gate. I studied the greats that played my position before me. I trained and I slowly moved up the ranks. First I joined committees as this is the way into the business end of the union. The committees are the backbone of the team. We are constantly urging our members to join a committee and get involved. We all work together, we see your face. When you join a committee, we hear your voice.

Next I ran for office. Not as easy as it sounds. My first elected position was district representative out of B-2 in 1983. Next was district rep out of homicide and then I became a Director. My first position on the executive board came when I was elected treasurer.  This is where I got my first real dose of reality. You see the society cannot be effective without money and there is a limited amount to work with. Restraint became the by-word during my time as treasurer. There are many things we would like to do, but the future of the society rests in its ability to sustain itself. I was not willing to mortgage the future of this great union and I adhere to that philosophy to this day.

Next up was the Vice Presidents office, one step away from being the team captain. From my perspective the best place to learn your craft. The President relies heavily on the Vice President as the work load at the top can be overwhelming at times. It’s like the backup quarterback. When the starter gets an injury, you’re up, kid. Always a good idea to be prepared.

And then the day came. I am now the starting quarterback and the team is depending on me to lead them in the right direction. Because of the long road and the great teachers, I feel not only ready to lead, but excited to show what I can do. Follow me boys, we are going to win them all! In reality, I know we are not going to win them all. Frankly I would be happy with a winning season as it is very difficult to negotiate during these tough times. It is not difficult to fight for what you know is right for each and every team member. As I said I came up through the ranks. I know what the rookie Detective is facing out there and I know what the veteran Detective is facing. I will fight for them both with everything we can muster at this society. When I leave this office I will hold my head high knowing I did everything I could to better the working conditions of the Boston Police Detective. And that my Brothers and Sisters is what this society is all about.
